Welcome to our glacier course at Demmevasshytta, which is designed for you who wish to go out and explore by themselves in a safe way! We will follow the Norwegian standar (NF Grunnkurs) and will be able to give you a certificate at the end of the course.

Demmevasshytta is located at Hardangerjøkulen and has one of the country’s mos stunning locations right next to the Rembesdalsskåkji glacier on the southwestern part of Hardangerjøkulen. Rembesdalsskåkji is a very fractured glacier and has a lot of exciting blue ice, which we can train and explore on. The cabin is also one of the most inaccessible cabins in Norway which makes the hike out there extraordinarily beautiful.

Instructors: Lars Bukkehave & Maria Winther

Language: English, Danish & Norwegian

Price: DKK 6.150,- pr person

Requirements: You have to be able to hike at least 10 km with a 20 kilo backpack. Most importantly is that you love being outdoors 🙂

DAY FOR DAY

Day 1 – Monday: Travel to Finse and meet at 17.00. We will go through all the gear, food and pack our bags this evening.

Day 2 – Tuesday: After a good breakfast at Finse we will hike into Demmevasshytta. This is the perfect start of the course, as we will be crossing two glacier arms where we will start with the introduction when having to cross a glacier.

The hike is about 20 km and therefore requires good hiking shape. We expect us to be out for about 10-12 hours.

Day 3 – Wednesday: We will wake up in the morning with stunning views of the glacier, where we will go and explore. Today our focus will be on navigation on a glacier, how we use the rope, crampon technique and glacier equipment, while moving around on the blue ice – learning by doing.

Day 4 – Thursday:  In order to learn to move around in a safe way on a glacier, will we today focus on rope team routines in more advanced ice and finishing off with demonstrating how to rescue a person who has fallen into a crevasse.

Day 5 – Friday: We will add more tools to our toolbox today, by practicing the rescue procedures of a person, once fallen into a crevasse. This can be done in many different ways, but we will focus on the most efficient once:
– Hoist systems (minimum 1:2 and maybe we’ll go through 1:3 and 1:6)
– Unloading of rope teams and methods for rescuing the first person in a rope team on blue ice
– Methods for buddy rescue on glaciers in rope teams of minimum 3 people

Day 6 – Saturday: Now it is time to use all the tools you have added to your toolbox throughout the week. All of you will have to plan our way back to Finsehytta by crossing Hardangerjøkulen.

This is a great day to be on your own, but with instructors on your rope team to support you in your choices along the way.

We will get a long magical day out on the glacier, easily taking 10-12 hours.

There is the option to stay at Finsehytta for your own account or book the train for Oslo airport og Bergen.

The program can change due to snow amount, temperature and wind. But we promise that you will get a lot of training on the glacier no matter what.
